Best Shoes for Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma is a painful foot condition, affecting around 10% of the populations. Morton's Neuroma affects the ball of your foot, usually in the area between your third and fourth toes. Sufferers of Morton's Neuroma compare the feeling to having a pebble in their shoe. It can be a very painful condition. Often the shoes you wear can have a positive or negative impact on the pain associated with Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma occurs due to the thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes. If the nerve is irritated or damaged this can cause a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot. Toes may also sting, burn or feel numb.

Symptoms

  • The feeling of having a stone in your shoe
  • Stinging or burning pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the foot

You may not have all of these symptoms, and some may be worse when you move your foot or wear tight or high-heeled shoes. Symptoms often worsen over time.

 Causes

  • High-heeled shoes have been linked to the development of Morton's Neuroma due to the fact that excessive pressure is placed on the ball of the foot. High heeled shoes, which tend to have smaller toe boxes compared to flats shoes, exacerbate the pain by squashing the feet together and cramping the tendons and nerves in the foot.
  • Certain sports, especially high-impact athletic activities such as jogging or running may subject your feet to repetitive trauma. Sports that feature tight shoes, such as snow skiing or rock climbing, can put pressure on your to
  • Foot deformities. People with foot issues such as bunions, hammertoes, high arches or flatfeet are at higher risk of developing Morton's neuroma

Best Types of Footwear if you have Morton’s Neuroma

It is really important to choose the right shoes if you suffer from Morton’s Neuroma as certain footwear will exacerbate the pain and worsen the condition. Other footwear can help relieve the symptoms and provide more comfort.

What should you look for when choosing suitable shoes if you have Morton’s Neuroma?

Shoes with a wide Toe Box: Wide toe box shoes help prevent the direct impact of pressure and force on the forefoot. A narrow toe box squashes the foot,  cramping the toes and causing an over-riding of metatarsal bones on each other. A wide fitting toe box helps prevent this happening as it gives more space for feet to maintain their natural shape.

Shoes with proper arch support: Arch supports cushion the most delicate part of the foot, as well as helping to ensure that the foot is properly aligned in the shoe. An arch support can also help take pressure off the forefoot.

The right-size footwear:  60% of the general population have different sized feet. Always choose a pair of shoes that fits the larger foot. You can add insoles or heel grips to the shoe of the smaller foot to ensure a better fit. Shoes that are too tight cause a range of foot issues including corns, bunions, hammertoes and Morton’s Neuroma

Low heel shoes: To help relieve the pain of Morton’s Neuroma, choose shoes that are low heeled or "flat". By flat we mean shoes that have a very small heel (no more than 1cm). Wearing totally flat shoes can cause Plantar Fasciitis, another painful foot condition, as well as leading to collapsed arches. A shoe with a very small heel is best for Morton Neuroma suffers as well as ensuring your feet don’t suffer from any other ailments associated with flat shoes that offer no structure or support.

Padded Insoles: Shoes with memory foam padding will cushion the balls of your foot acting as shock absorbers which will offer relier.

There are times when you may wish to wear heels. You can still opt for heels that have features that can help relieve the pain of Morton’s Neuroma. These include, wide fitting toe boxes, arch supports, padded memory foam insoles and adjustable straps.

Why choose Sargasso & Grey shoes if you have Morton's Neuroma?

Sargasso & Grey shoes make an excellent choice if you have Morton's Neuroma

All of our shoes are made with a wider fitting toe box, offering extra space for feet to relax, preventing the cramping of toes and the squashing of the ball of the foot. Our shoes have padded memory foam insoles which cushion the balls of the feet, acting as shock absorbers and offering relief for the symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma.

Most of our shoes contain breathable arch supports (please see individual product shots and product description for clarification) which give comfort to foot arches.

Our trainers are made with removable arch supports which means if you do have custom made orthotics you can use them in the trainers. If you don't have custom orthotics, the trainers contain soft foam padded sports orthotic insoles which will cushion the balls of your feet.

Our flat shoes are all an extra wide EEE fitting and all have a small 1cm heel which offers suitable structure and support for the feet whilst allowing an even distribution of weight across the whole of the foot. Even though our flat shoes have pointed toes, the extra width still provides ample space for the feet, and they size up generously so that toes will not feel squashed.

Our shoes are only wide in the toe box area, which is where most people need the extra width. The heel cups are a standard width meaning feet won’t slip out of our shoes.
