The Best Shoes for a High Instep

The Best Shoes for a High Instep

Best Shoes for a High Instep: What Actually Fits (and What to Avoid)

The short answer: A high instep is a foot with extra height through the middle, over the arch. It's a depth problem, not a width or length problem - which is why sizing up or buying a wider fit rarely fixes it. Shoes for a high instep need adjustability where the foot is tallest: buckles, elastic backstraps, T-bars, laces or completely open constructions. Fixed vamps with high uppers are the styles that hurt, however wide they are.

If your shoes fit at the toes and at the heel but leave a red band across the top of your foot by lunchtime, you almost certainly have a high instep. It's one of the most common fit problems we hear about, and one of the least discussed - most fit advice is about length and width, and a high instep is neither.

What is a high instep?

The instep is the top of your foot, over the arch. A high instep means that section is taller than average, so your foot needs more vertical space inside a shoe.

Two feet can measure identically for length and width and still need different shoes, because one is low-volume and the other is full through the middle. Brands size for length, better ones size for width, whilst depth is less common. That gap is where the pain comes from.

It's usually inherited, often alongside a high arch. It isn't a medical problem in itself - it's a shape. The pain comes from the shoe, not the foot.

6 signs you have a high instep

  1. A red or indented band across the top of your foot when you take your shoes off, in the same place every time.

  2. Buckles that only fasten on the last hole, or won't reach at all, though the shoe fits everywhere else.
  3. Laces you have to leave loose to be comfortable - and then your heel slips.
  4. Courts and loafers feel tight over the top but loose at the sides, so sizing up makes them fall off rather than fit.
  5. You have to force your foot into shoes that are the right length.
  6. Aching or burning across the top of the foot after walking, sometimes with tingling in the toes.

How to measure your instep

Width charts won't capture this. Sit down with your foot flat on the floor, run a soft tape from the floor beside your arch, up over the highest point of your instep, and back down the other side. Read the circumference in centimetres, measure both feet, use the larger.

Then compare it to your ball girth - the same wrap-around measurement across the widest part of your foot. If the instep number is close to or bigger than the ball number, adjustability will do more for you than width will.

High instep vs wide feet: not the same problem

Vamp advice

A higher-cut vamp reduces friction and covers bunions A lower-cut or adjustable vamp releases it

That last row matters. High-coverage shoes are excellent advice for bunions and exactly the wrong advice for a high instep, because a deep vamp sits precisely where your foot is tallest. If you have both - which is common - you want width and coverage at the toes, with an adjustable strap or open design rather than a fixed vamp holding the shoe on.

What to look for

  • An adjustable buckle. The most useful feature there is: you set the volume instead of accepting the factory's. Check the strap actually moves - plenty of buckles are decorative.
  • Elastic backstraps and gussets. Elastic gives under load and returns, holding the shoe on without clamping across the top.
  • T-bars and single straps. One narrow strap over the instep instead of a broad panel means far less material on the high point. These tend to be a lot more flexible, also.
  • Open constructions. Sandals, slingbacks and mules remove the problem rather than accommodating it.
  • Removable insoles. Taking a layer out gains depth downwards, away from the top of your foot.
  • Soft, lightly lined uppers. Press a thumb where the shoe would cross your instep. If it gives, it will adapt to you. If it's rigid, it won't.

One free fix worth knowing: window lacing. At the sore point, run the lace straight up on each side to the next eyelet instead of crossing over. That leaves a gap with no tension across the high point, and you carry on criss-crossing above and below it.

What to avoid

Fixed-vamp court shoes have one volume, and if it isn't yours, nothing can be done.

Loafers without give will increase pressure.

Straps without buckles offer no room for natural foot movement or swelling, which is problematic for an already high instep.

And sizing up - the common instinct and the least effective. A longer shoe is barely any deeper at the instep, and now it slips at the heel too. This can have a lead-on effect to other foot problems. Change the closure, not the size.

The best Sargasso & Grey shoes for a high instep

Our shoes are built in EE and EEE fittings on our own wide lasts, so they start with more internal volume. These are the styles where the closure does the extra work.

    Arya Extra-Wide Fit Platform Heels

EEE toe box, available in black, navy and light blue suede.

The best high-instep shoe we make. It's a D'Orsay, so the sides are cut away, and the decorative ribbon deliberately ties over the instep rather than round the ankle - meaning you set the tension exactly, with no fixed buckle holes to run out of. A hidden platform absorbs the impact.

    Lou Extra-Wide Fit Kitten Heels

Lou wide fit navy suede micro-heels, second lifestyle product shot

EEE toe box, available in black suede and black leather, navy and tan suede.

Lou has nothing to loosen - it's just made with more room inside than an ordinary court shoe, so much so that we tell people to take a half size smaller than usual. If buckles and straps aren't your taste, plain extra room is the other way to solve a high instep.

Veronica Extra Wide Buckle Pointed Flat

EEE toe box, dual padded insole and arch support.

The reason to wear this one is underfoot. The insole is dual-padded - two layers of cushioning rather than the single thin sock most flats give you - with arch support built in, so a shoe this slim doesn't leave you feeling every paving slab by mid-afternoon.

    Lorna Extra-Wide Fit T-Bar Heels

Lorna wide fit black leather T-bar heels worn on model, side profile

    EEE toe box, black leather.

The T-bar is the whole reason it's here: a single narrow strap running up the centre of the foot to an adjustable buckle, instead of a broad panel lying across your instep. Most of the top of your foot stays uncovered, which is exactly what you want when height is the problem, and you set the buckle where it suits you. Inside there's memory foam and hidden cushioning panels, with a generous toe area. This is the style to try if you need a smart shoe with a little more security.

    Amalie Buckle Low Heel Slingback

EE toe box, 4cm block heel, black leather.

This style allows for a more tailored fit. The back is open, so nothing grips your heel, and the backstrap fastens with a genuinely adjustable buckle - meaning the shoe is held on from behind rather than by clamping across the top of your foot. The toe box is roomy with a hidden foam panel for sensitive joints, and the insole is dual-padded. A stable, low block heel rather than a stiletto makes this the one on the list you can stand in all day, at a wedding or at work.

    When it isn't just fit

Most instep pain disappears when the shoe changes. See a GP or a registered podiatrist if pain persists barefoot or in soft shoes, if you get burning or numbness spreading into your toes, if there's visible swelling or a lump, or if it followed a fall or a sharp increase in activity. Persistent pain across the top of the foot can be extensor tendonitis, a compressed nerve or a stress fracture - all treatable, none solved by different shoes alone.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a high instep? A foot with more height and volume through the midfoot, over the arch, so it needs more vertical space inside a shoe. It's a shape variation, not a medical condition.

What shoes are best for a high instep? Shoes with adjustable closures - buckled straps, T-bars, laces, elasticated backstraps - and open constructions like sandals, mules and slingbacks. Removable insoles help too, because taking a layer out adds depth.

Should I size up if I have a high instep? No. Sizing up adds length, not depth, so it barely relieves pressure over the instep while causing heel slip. Change the style of closure instead.

Is a high instep the same as wide feet? No. Wide feet are oversized across the ball; a high instep is oversized in height through the midfoot. You can have either or both, and the fixes differ.

How do you lace shoes for a high instep? Use window lacing: at the painful point, take the lace straight up on each side to the next eyelet rather than crossing it over, then resume criss-crossing above and below.

Why do my shoes hurt on top of my foot but not the sides? Because it's depth, not width. Your foot is taller through the middle than the shoe allows, so pressure lands on top. A wider shoe won't fix it; a more adjustable one will.
